Renew before the date

Driving without valid insurance is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, and an accident on a lapsed policy means you pay every rupee yourself. The safest habit is to renew a few days before the expiry date printed on your policy.

What to carry to the office

• Registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle.
• Your previous policy, or at least the policy number.
• Driving licence or another ID proof.
• Your mobile number, so the policy and reminders reach you.

If the policy has already expired

You can usually still take a new policy, but the insurer may ask for an inspection of the vehicle, and the no-claim discount you had built up may be lost if the gap is long. Ask us at the office and we will tell you what applies in your case.

Third-party or comprehensive?

Third-party cover is the legal minimum and pays for injury or damage you cause to others. Comprehensive cover adds protection for your own vehicle against accident, fire, theft and natural calamities. For a newer vehicle, comprehensive is normally the better choice.
